Description

A brush study of this painting exists in the De Grez Collection, now in the possession of the Royal Museums of Fine Arts and Brussels.

See Ship on beach 1836 brush drawing 17.7 x 25.5 cm

In terms of subject matter, the painting bears a strong resemblance to the ‘Shipwreck on a Rocky Coast’. Here, too, it appears as if the ship has only just run aground. Several passengers have already left the ship, while others are still on board. A fire is being stoked at the bow. The anchor in the foreground, lying between an overturned lifeboat and a broken mast, is perhaps a reference to hope (for rescue).
