Description
Nuijen submitted this painting in the year 1830—he was then barely 17 years old—in response to a competition: it promptly earned him an award.
Awarded in 1830 by ‘Felix Meritis’ in Amsterdam. Submitted at the age of 17! under the motto ‘This winter, which offers no rose etc.’
Understandably, at this age Nuijen was still under the spell of his teacher Schelfhout: see, for example, the blocks of ice around the hole. On the other hand, his own invention is nevertheless noticeable, if only because Nuijen placed the horizon somewhat higher than Schelfhout used to do, giving the scene a certain intimacy that is sometimes lacking in Schelfhout's work. The Van Vreedenburchweg still exists and has only partially changed in character. Although: one would search in vain for such a serene winter tranquility there nowadays.
